Students stand by workers at McDonald’s

Auckland University Students’ Association stands in solidarity with workers at McDonalds in their fight against low-pay, casualisation, poor working conditions and discrimination such as homophobia and sexual harassment.

On May 1st McDonald’s workers held a demonstration outside the company’s Queen St site.

Our members who were present at the demonstration were shocked by the accounts given by striking McDonald’s staff not only of unpaid wages, favouritism and nepotism, but also homophobia and sexual discrimination, including workers being told ‘don’t act gay’ and that if they ‘turn other workers gay’ that they will be punished.

AUSA is an organisation of 20,000 student members.

We acknowledge that many of our members work part-time in fast food restaurants such as McDonalds and we support the efforts being taken by to increase wages and create safer work environments free from intimidation and abuse.

Our members and delegates will be attending the Kiss-In at McDonalds Britomart, Auckland City at 8pm on Friday 10th May to remind McDonald’s to treat Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Lesbian workers in their company with the respect and dignity that they deserve.
