Why McDonalds workers are fighting

11 Jun

Reason 1. Low Pay.

Reason 2. No Overtime after 8 hours working.

Reason 3. No Staff Meal on Shift.

Reason 4. No help to a worker’s family in the event of death

Reason 5. No bonuses: Workers at KFC, Pizza Hut, Carls Jr and Starbucks get a union organised bonus for Christmas, May Day and Spring. These have included movie tickets, supermarket vouchers to help with the christmas shopping, and Rainbows End tickets.

Lost all respect the moment one of their main complaints was not going to Rainbows End…

The point is not Rainbows End or any of the other specific benefits – it is that union members pay personally for the considerable effort and resources that go into negotiations and improving wages and conditions, but employers pass on those improvements to non-union members who contribute nothing. The benefits program is a way for union members contribution being recognised and compensated for – a way to stop freeloading. We are yet to hear from a non-union member who doesn’t want the pay increase or better conditions their union workmates paid and fought for. Happy to take the benefits themselves and let the people they work alongside pay all the costs.
